Wireless Driveway Alarm System – Dakota WPA-3000 Wireless Probe

Do a quick search on Amazon for a driveway alarm, and you will turn up a large number of results. Some of the alarms are cheap and some expensive. To find out what best suits your needs for security ask these questions.

  1. What are you trying to protect? If this is a business you are trying to protect, then it is likely that your business has valuable property, tools and equipment. Don’t skimp on your security for this.
  2. Do you care about false alarms? Some of the driveway systems go off when they detect a small animal or even the wind. Motion sensor PIR based systems don’t work well next to trees or with animals.

For these two reasons, you may be interested in only knowing when cars approach your house or business. If that is the case, then consider the Dakota WPA 3000 Drive Alert.  This system uses a buried cable which works similar to a sensor at a stoplight.  The cable is buried along the length of your driveway beside it. When a vehicle passes over, it send you an alert. Once you receive that alert, you can do a number of different things with it. Dakota gives you the option of notifying someone or a number of someones about the person in your driveway or at your business.

However, before buying this system, consider if it is practical for your location. Can you actually bury this cable somewhere and the sensor?  Maybe you are in a parking lot and you can’t do that. In that case, it may be best to put in a regular motion detector. Dakota Alert sells those as well. Their products are not the cheapest in motion detecting but you do get what you pay for. Consider first though your security application and what you are trying to secure.
