LaserShield BSK-0013101 Home Security System Review
This is a review of the LaserShield BSK-0013101 Home Security System. I originally was going to purchase one of these units for my aunt. She lives in a high crime area and the product named sounded pretty good. Laser Sheild! Almost out of Star Trek or something. However, I quickly found out that the product was not as good as it sounds. There is really no laser involved. This is a motion based sensor connected to an alarm. It has to detect motion like other systems detect motion.
There are two major problems that I discovered with this product. One is mainly how the product was designed. This product does not detect motion well. You would think that as the basis of an alarm, the motion detector unit would be the best part of it, but it didn’t pick up on motion all of the time. It was touchy is the best word. After I set it up, I would walk by it and it would usually pick up my motion. However, if I was in a different part of the room, it did not pick me up. Even though I was within the recommended range of the system. Also, it did not pick up on my wife’s movement through the room most of the time. So the alarm was not very impressive.
Now for the bigger issue, the company that makes the product. You can signup for security monitoring with the company but working the phone with the alarm system doesn’t always work. Sometimes when I had the alarm system hooked up, it would actually answer my phone when someone called! Talk about annoying. I tried all sorts of different things to fix it, such as a line filter on the phone line, but that did not work. When I tried to call the company to get some technical support, it was about a 30 minute wait. I really don’t have that much time to spend on a product like this.
I think from going back and looking at the reviews on this product, that I would not have purchased it if I would have known how difficult it was to use and also how bad the company was about answering my calls. One of my friends recommended that I just go with one of the larger security firms, and that is what I did. If you don’t want the hassel of setting up a system, you can have ADT install a wireless system. No drilling, etc, and that worked well for us. All in all, I would not recommend this product.
