GE 50246 Smart Home Door Stop Alarm Review

This is a review for the GE 50246 Smart Home Door Stop Alarm. If you travel frequently or want to secure some part of your house with a door alarm, then this is the alarm for you. At only $9.65 online, this alarm makes good economical sense and is simple to use. When I first saw it, I wondered how it worked. Most alarms are setup by connecting two sensors together. If the two sensors are connected together, then the alarm does not go off. If one of the sensors is moved away from the other one, then the alarm goes off.

Most often those sensors are electrical contacts, but in this case the device looks like a small wedge door stop. It would look like the kind of things that people would use to just hold a door open. However, in this case a pressure sensitive contact has been put into the door stop so that if a door is opened, it sets off the alarm.

Well, now to the nitty gritty. What about using this thing. I ordered this on a Tuesday and got it a couple of days later. When I opened the box I was a little suprised to not find a 9 volt battery with the unit. Oh, well I guess for $9 bucks, it doesn’t matter. So I had to get a battery to install and then set it up. Setting the system “up” is as simple as just putting it down by the door you want to secure with the then end facing the door. When the door opens, the alarm sounds. And when the alarm sounds, it is pretty loud. Loud enough to be heard at the other end of our house I found. I had a friend too who wanted to give one of these a try and he put it downstairs. His master bedroom is upstairs and he was able to hear it go off.

This is also a handy alarm for traveling as well. Just throw it in your suitcase and you can put it in any hotel room. This is especially nice if the hotel doesn’t have the special locks on the door.  Sometimes my wife and I stay in hotels that are a little on the cheaper side in other countries and this is a nice thing to take along. Usually though when I travel with this, I put it in my luggage that is checked. It shouldn’t be any problem in traveling but sometimes the security people are odd when they see something they haven’t seen before.

Overall for $10, I would purchase this product again. It does exactly what it should do.
