Can you get an ADT security system for free

Recently I was doing some research on security systems and noticed some advertisements for a Free ADT security system. That was facinating to me because I had paid for one and it was expensive. Buyers remorse you know and all of that. So I did some research on some of the companies that are offering these “free” security systems to see if there was any catch. I wanted to know if they really did offer a free security system. The key question in my mind was, are they going to charge me a higher monthly fee for giving me a free system. ADT typically charges around $30 per month for their security system. For a list of their typical fees, see these other articles I wrote here – http://www.teepeetech.com/home-security-systems/how-much-does-adt-cost-m… which goes through some of the standard costs.

If you search for “can I get a free adt system” in Google, your first result will be a company called Security Choice. Well, it was neat to get thier site because they had link to what I thought was a comparison between Brinks and ADT. Well, I clicked on the link and it displayed just their banner (not a good sign for their business). I then clicked on “Equipment” and saw the same problem. Sense a pattern here anyone.

In fact, none of their menu items worked at all except for (and conveniety might I add) the “Order Now” link and the “Home” link. So they just wanted to get you onto the phone. What happens there is probably pretty easy to guess. They will try to talk you into a sales pitch if you sign up with a long contract with them. If they are a security reseller, they could theoretically mark up the price of the monthly monitoring fee.

Looking down into the small print at the bottom of the page, I found this:

“Next day installation subject to availability in your area. $99.00 Customer Installation Charge. 36-Month Monitoring Agreement required at $35.99 per month ($1,295.64). Form of payment must be by credit card or electronic charge to your checking or savings account. Offer applies to homeowners only. Local permit fees may be required. Satisfactory credit history required. Certain restrictions may apply. Offer valid for new ADT Authorized Dealer customers only and not on purchases from ADT Security Services, Inc. Other rate plans available. Cannot be combined with any other offer. For a list of dealers click here.”

So, they charge you a $99 installation fee. That doesn’t sound free to me. Then your monitoring agreement is $36 / month which is roughly $6 dollars higher than what I pay.

Remember, if something sounds like it is too good to be true, it probably is. You are better off to go with a security system from a local company, or consider installing one yourself.
